The Aztec sun god Tonatiuh sits in the center of the calendar stone. The disk was used to determine astronomical events, which can be carried out using complicated calculations based on the dots and double lines in the surrounding rings. Alexander von Humboldt brought the precious object back to Berlin from his research trip in 1799-1805. The original made of serpentine has been considered lost since the Second World War. However, this plaster cast comes from the Gipsformerei Berlin, which has a large art archive.

We have gilded the plaster cast with gold leaf using the oil gilding technique.
